We are trying something a little bit different for our October meeting.

Jane Wilder O’Connor has worked with Molly Conroy Ungerecht, one of the

founding members of the Hands-on Knitting Center, to develop a program on

Understanding Plant Based Fibers for Weaving.

Molly is best known as a wonderful knitting teacher and designer, but she’s also

an accomplished weaver. She originally developed this class for knitters, but at

our request, has experimented with weaving plant-based fibers, and created a

class just for us!

In addition, she has designed a draft for us and is offering plant-based fiber kits to

create a scarf on a rigid heddle loom (you could also use a multiple shaft loom if

you prefer). The kit is made up of detailed instructions, 4 different warp yarns,

and 14 weft yarns, enough to make a generously long scarf. This is a wonderful

opportunity to experiment with these fascinating fibers without actually having

to purchase 18 different skeins for yourself. Each kit costs $35, a fraction of the

cost it would take to buy all these yarns.

We hope that if you have a rigid heddle loom, you’ll purchase the kit, warp up

your loom ahead of time, and weave along with the presentation (if you need help

warping your loom, please let Jadie know and we’ll arrange a time to help). It

would also be possible to buy the kit for future use. Alternatively, you are very

welcome to simply come along and listen to the presentation. Either way, this is a

wonderful opportunity to learn all about these fabulous fibers which are perfect

for our warm and sunny Southern California climate.
